Venture West // Peru

Schools Community Project & Trekking, Peru

The land of the incas!

Peru has so much to offer in terms of culture, variety of environment and iconic locations. Teams will experience this travelling up jungle rivers, trekking on the Inca Trail, living and working with Andean communities and exploring Machu Picchu.

This expedition combines a community project with a trekking challenge. Students will manage many of the elements of the expedition themselves, including navigation on the trek, budget, accomodation bookings and food supplies. Teams are supported throughout by our experienced expedition leaders and our in-country team.  This expedition offers so many opportunities for students to push themselves and to develop and learn new skills, while they adventure through Peru.

The community project phase not only enables the team to assist in a project that directly benefits the host community, but also gives students the opportunity to really get to know what life is like living in the remote villages of the foothills of the Andes.  Teams will work on a much needed project for a local community.

Every project is a collaboration, with decisions on which projects to tackle based on what the local community feel is a sustainable resolution to a problem they’ve highlighted.  Our projects benefit not only our host communities, but everyone that takes part. A true collaboration of cultures and global citizenship!

Our expeditions include local interest visits, providing educational opportunities, adventure, as well as an insight into the country’s heritage, history and people and so.  These can include;

  • Jungle Camp – Teams will journey upriver on motorised canoes to their jungle camp. Here they will spend a couple of days camping out, learning about the flora and fauna, and the lives of the people who live here
  • Machu Picchu – a vist to the world famous site of the 15th century Inca citadel
  • Whitewater rafting – working closely together as a team, students will negotiate the rapids of the Chuquicahuana section of the Rio Urubamba   for an adrenaline fuelled experience! (up to whitewater level 3)
  • Cusco visit – teams will explore the city and the fascinating Peruvian history and heritage

Our focus on development means teams lead on planning, managing food and navigation during the trek phase. Teams need to work together to successfully meet this challenge.

Teams will take on the challenge of the 4 day trek along the Salkantay Trail. This trail takes in parts of the Inca Trail, small villages growing coffee, and finishes at the town of Aguas Calientes, below Machu Picchu. The trail route is spectacular! The team’s effots will be rewarded with awe inspiring views and dramatic scenery.

The team’s efforts will be rewarded with awe inspiring views and dramatic scenery.

Embrace the challenge and remember the unique experience!

Our aim is to take our student teams out of their comfort zone. We don’t provide luxury tours as, in our experience, this isn’t the way to find out about real life in Peru.

Accommodation and food is likely to be different to what students have experienced in the UK. We encourage students to get involved in every aspect of expedition life, as this is an integral part of developmental expeditions.  By embracing the challenge students often surprise themselves and end up achieving things they never thought possible.
