This really is a journey of exploration, of both the fringes of the Harding Icefield and of students own boundaries.  The team carry all the food, equipment and fuel needed for them to live on the ice for between 10 -12 days.  Once a base camp is established the team undertake day journeys, to explore the valley glaciers flowing from the ice field, as well as climbing some of the Nunataks – rocky peaks standing above the ice.

Living, camping, on the ice is a challenge in itself; water is obtained by melting snow, toilets must be built, and all waste has to be carried out at the end of the trip.  Basic mountaineering skills are provided in pre-departure training and these are developed, along with glacier travel skills and snow survival techniques, over the course of the expedition. 

We work with selected partners who are specialists in their conservation field. Their expert guidance enables our teams to take part in impactful conservation projects.

Previous Alaskan expedition projects have involved renovating an original Trappers log cabin, constructing footbridges and the rescue and renovation of a heritage steam engine.  Future Alskan project will ;

• Be delivered in partnership with the AFWS as part of their ongoing annual work programme in the Kenai National Park
• Usually be a one-off project to a remote and challenging environment, where the team are completely self sufficient for between 5 – 10 days
• see students take the lead and manage the project through to fruition,  supported by our experienced leaders and the AFWS staff

It would be completely inappropriate to travel to Alaska without taking some time to explore the less wild places, the more ‘normal’ tourist destinations.  Anchorage has a huge array of attractions, as does Seward, if you don’t mind a little rain! We never let the weather hold us back at Venture Force!
