GR20 CORSICA (NORTHERN SECTION)

WHAT IS THE GR20 LIKE?

The GR20 long distance route climbs high into the Corsican mountain range that runs North to South through the island. It is a serious undertaking that many seasoned trekkers feel on completion was the hardest GR route that they have undertaken. However the effort and preparation involved is hugely rewarded with the views, isolated landscapes and the satisfaction felt on completion.

Each day covers a relatively short distance, but this is serious mountain walking and each stage is around 6 to 7 hours of hiking. This should give you some idea as to the nature of the terrain: jaw-dropping, beautiful, high and (at times) a little scary.

In recognition of work and holiday constraints Venture Force have dissected the route and will be leading an 11 day mini-expedition over the Northern half of the route from Calenzana in the North to Vizzavona at the midway point leaving the remainder of the route for another time.

EXPEDITION ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive in Corsica and transfer to accommodation at Calenzana.
Day 2: Trek 10km from Calenzana to Refuge d'Ortu. Over 1200m of ascent today we climb up into the mountains. With only 50m descent all day, it's a tough start.
Day 3: Trek 8km from Di u Piobbu to Carozzu around the mountainous Cirque de Bonifatu.
Day 4: Trek 6km from Carozzu to Haut Asco. River crossings are a feature today including the iconic Spasimata footbridge suspended 30m across a waterfall and ending at the ski resort underneath the mighty Monte Cinto.
Day 5: Trek 8km from Haut Asco to Auberge u Vallone through the incredible (and character-building) Cirque de la Solitude. A system of ladders and chains renders this technical route passable (and very memorable).
Day 6: Trek 13km from Vallone to Castel di Verghio. Another day with plenty of height gain through forests and past mountain pools with a chance for a quick dip!
Day 7: Trek 14km from Verghio to Manganu over the Col de Retu.
Day 8: Trek 10km from Manganu to Petra Piana above the beautiful Lac di Capitelu.
Day 9: Trek 10km from Petra Piana to Onda. This is a much easier day heading mostly downhill through forests towards the centre of the island.
Day 10: Trek 10km from Onda to Vizzavona. Another day characterised by a strong downhill element through forests to reach the station at Vizzavona where we transfer to hotel accommodation and enjoy an evening celebration.
Day 11: Depart for the UK.
