Community Project Ghana

Comunity Project Expedition, Volta Region Ghana

Immerse yourself in Ghanaian rural life!

For many years we have been working with the local communities in the Volta region of Ghana. The warmth, hospitality, and friendships given to us by the local people has changed our lives.  We value everything we have shared and our experiences with these wonderful people.

This fabulous partnership with our Ghanaian friends has resulted in the completion of various construction projects for the local community. These include the installation of water purifications systems, communal toilet facilities for small rural villages, and the refurbishment of medical facilities. Our biggest project, which started in 2012, has seen us take up the cause of a small local orphanage, the ‘Eugemot Orphanage’.  True teamwork and a desire to achieve what we started, has resulted in the construction (from scratch) of their new home.  It now consists of three large comfortable accommodation blocks, kitchens, their own bakery and a playpark complete with swings and a climbing wall.

All our Ghana expeditions include a community project phase. This not only enables us to assist in a project that directly benefits the host community, but also gives our team the opportunity to live with and really get to know what rural Ghanaian life is like.

Every project is a collaboration, with decisions on which projects to tackle based on what the local community feel is a sustainable resolution to a problem they’ve highlighted. Our projects benefit not only our host communities, but everyone that takes part. A true collaboration of cultures and global citizenship!

Our expeditions also include local interest visits, providing rest and relaxation. These visits can include trips to:

  • West Africa’s highest waterfall (Wli waterfall at 130m). Ideal for an exhilarating dip in the jungle
  • Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, home to troops of Mona Monkeys that, although wild within their sanctuary, roam through the local village and have become revered and loved by its inhabitants
  • Kente weaving village to watch and take part in the traditional weaving of the Volta region

To further immerse ourselves in the community, teams take part in numerous activities that may include African drumming & dancing, visits to the community’s places of worship, schools and homes.

We feel it is important to respect local traditions and therefore our teams will meet the Chiefs and Elders of local clans at a welcome ceremony. These ceremonies are fun, entertaining and a valuable insight into traditional Ghanaian life. A formal and heart-warming experience.

Embrace the challenge and remember the unique experience!

Our aim is take you out of your comfort zone.  Don’t expect air conditioned rooms and coaches with waitress service.  We don’t provide luxury tours knowing from experience that real traditional Ghanaian life cannot be found there.

Our accommodation is always basic but clean, showers will on most occasions be a bucket shower (but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it – we think they’re magical) and food will be local, fresh, plentiful and cooked by one of our in-country team.  Hopefully you’ll want to get involved in all aspects of expedition life and take away some forever memories.
