Russ started out competing at both sprint and slalom canoeing, combining this in the early days with Sub-aqua diving. He kicked off his sailing for a short time sailing mirror dinghies on the lakes of South Wales.

In the mid eighties Russ took to sailing small cruisers predominantly around the south and east coast of the UK. Since then Russ became a qualified British Sub-Aqua Diving instructor, and later a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Yachtmaster Shorebased Instructor.
With well over 10,000 nautical miles experience, he has delivered boats to various parts of the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean.
